At the end of the course, the students:
- are familiar with the most important classes of organic substances and their physical and chemical properties;
- are able to identify typical physical properties and chemical reactions on the basis of the corresponding molecular structures and to understand fundamental organic reaction mechanisms;
- understand how functional groups can be converted into one another under certain reaction conditions;
- are familiar with the basics of stereochemistry;
- are able to understand the properties of essential classes of biomolecules (such as amino acids, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids).
- Fundamental principles of organic chemistry (such as theory of chemical bonds and molecular structure),
- Introduction into important classes of organic substances (including essential classes of biomolecules) with a special focus on their physical and chemical properties (such as volatility, polarity, solubility, acidity / basicity).
- Presentation of typical chemical reactions of organic compounds including reaction mechanisms,
- Influences of stereochemical aspects on the molecular structure as well as the physical and chemical properties of organic substances.
At the end of the course:
- students are able to transfer their knowlegde (lecture topics) to corresponding exercise problems;
- students are able to formulate and explain the corresponding reaction equations and mechanisms.
- Students are familiar with important techniques of classic preparative and analytical organic chemistry.
- They gained first practical experience in the preparation, purification and characterisation of organic substances.
- Basic techniques of organic synthesis (such as heating under reflux, recrystallization, liquid-liquid extraction),
- Basic techniques of analytical organic chemistry (such as determination of melting points and optical purities)
Recommendations: Successful completion of module General Chemistry (1st Sem.)
Passing of module – graded
Written final examination (90 %)
Lab course (oral examination and lab report (10 %)
Both parts have to be passed separately.
